Day 267 – Colourful towers

Preparing for a colleague’s birthday we decided to get something different than the usual faux creamed cake for something we knew she’d rather enjoy from Sift…

With several towers topped with a candle, she squealed in delight as she came into the conference room as we sung her a birthday song. There were plenty enough to go around, though for some they were eying up a few. Immediately going for the chocolate one, I was down to my last bite when another colleague who was a little too slow, had missed on having a chocolate one and so kindly shared my last piece. Next up was the passion – which was half green and half orange, the passion fruit filling was fresh and sweet! hmmm.. luckily for us, some found them too sweet and quickly dispersed, leaving a few vultures to finish off the rest. I quickly grabbed the caramel and departed to my seat to enjoy in silence. Though the chocolate one is still my favourite. I’ve already put in a request for my birthday to have an all chocolate macaroon tower! Hopefully someone remembers ha.

Day 265 – Tminus100

So today is when the real countdown from 100 begins. Feel free to read my premature one at Day 256. Same numbers, just a different order. It could happen to anyone, really.

Well given the special day, I really don’t have anything special to write about. A bit of an anti-climax… It’s not that I only have 100 days left to consume chocolate, as I will continue to do so. Yep.

Day 264 – Lippolis

Lippolis, fine Italian ice cream, we had to line up to get a sample of these, but it was difficult as you couldn’t see the flavours until you were right up by the counter and then you were under pressure as the man was standing poised ready with the scoop and cup, waiting for you to choose. There was no time for sampling flavours so I quickly made a decision with chocolate and hazelnut. Yep it was basically a Ferrero Rocher and was amazing! The ice cream was smooth and the chocolate nice and rich. There was, of course a technique to getting the right amount of chocolate and hazelnut to have the perfect combination of flavours in your mouth. But really, you couldn’t go wrong. Each spoonful was heavenly and I mmm’d after every mouthful.

Day 263 – Honey hill

This is a terrible photo so apologies as there was only one –

Honey Hill Farms produce frozen yoghurts, sorbets and desserts. This was another chocolate item sampled at the HOFEX event a while back. It had the tartness of a yoghurt based item, and the chocolate wasn’t very strong. I think I prefer my froyos the original way, as I don’t quite fancy sour-tart chocolate.

Day 261 – Night o’convenience

It was the wrong side of midnight and I was needing some sweet relief after working away crunching numbers on various spreadsheets.

Venturing into the night, the warm air blanketed me as I swiftly made my way in the direction of a froyo place nearby. Unfortunately, given the hour they had long since closed their doors and so I was at the crossroads deciding whether to venture on further to one of the many 24-hour McDonald’s in the vicinity for my beloved hot fudge sundae…

Knowing my weakness for golden arch’s fries, I turned on my heels and headed back home in confidence that I’d pass a few convenient stores, aptly located.

Circle K it was. I sometimes have a preference for this place as with other items beginning with the same letter as my name. A little juvenile, I know.

As I made my way to the cold cabinets I was taken by the fuss a couple were making with their purchases, Opening little tubs and pumping colourful liquid into them as they chatted excitedly. Curious I peered over and suddenly understood their animated behavior and wanted in! I clocked another cold cabinet next to the cashier, an adolescent server to whom I prompted asked for two and settled up.

The couple had scurried out with their precious packages and I made my way to the countertop to embark on my delicious midnight snack “Creamy Cow” –

The mini ice cream pottles at $7.50 a piece!! The best thing is that you can add whatever sauce and how ever much you want! For one I mixed strawberry and chocolate and the other had caramel. They weren’t both for me, I’m not that piggy!

The ice cream was soft and as the name suggests, it was indeed creamy. The chocolate wasn’t like the McD’s hot fudge, but it wasn’t bad at all and it blended nicely with the sweet red sauce. What a great little treat, available at any time of the day or night and it’s only a few steps away. Yay I like discoveries like this!!

Day 260 – Hazelnutty

Standing at the chocolate aisle I was a little uninspired by the selection on display, either I had already tried them, or they were milk chocolate so weren’t so appealing to me. I picked up a few different blocks to read more about them, but even still nothing seemed to capture my tastebuds. Even the packaging and designs weren’t doing it for me.

I finally went with this one, Villars the love of 110 years of Swiss chocolate! I love the old packaging and the tin boxes (yes I do have a tin collection).

It wasn’t very dark despite what the packaging says, 50% cocoa solids and it actually it quite soft (also due to the current warm temperature in the room)! It’s going quite nicely with my coffee, with the smooth chocolate and the fine hazelnuts spread evenly throughout. It reminds me a little of a Ferrero Rocher, yes being one of the most popular hazelnut chocolates, you would probably get that. A random fact, Turkey is one of the largest producers of hazelnuts! Also, they’re a pretty good nut, check out some of tehse dietary facts (source Wikipedia):

Hazelnuts are rich in protein and unsaturated fat. Moreover, they contain significant amounts of thiamine and vitamin B6, as well as smaller amounts of other B vitamins. Additionally, 1 cup (237 ml) of hazelnut flour has 20 g of carbohydrates, 12 g of which are dietary fiber.[1]

Remember to think about that when buying your next nutty chocolate!

Day 259 – Oranginos

I am really like the Schar products and their jaffa cakes aptly called Oranginos are pretty darn good!

The cakey biscuit is a little dry but it works nicely with the gooey sweet orange filling and chocolate coating. It is matched well with a coffee. I think finishing off the box tomorrow will be easy.

Day 258 – Save the date

We’re going to New Zealand. “Why?” shouldn’t be your question, it should be “when?”

To answer the first question anyway, who could say no to the quietness, lack of people and serene beauty of the place, and there’s another reason to go sooner, such as this August as there’s a Chocolate Festival from 12-14 in Wellington!! And look at Theo, how could you not be tempted by him? I wonder if he’ll actually be there!

Click on the image to find out more, I’m going to go book tickets home…
