Day 92 – Fortune cookies

Managed to get the last one of these and I know they’re christmas cookies, but it doesn’t really matter when you eat them, now does it?

Emily’s Dark Chocolate peppermint fortune cookies are a wonderful little treat during the festive season, with warm fuzzy sayings and encouragements inside.

The dark mint chocolate coating was laid on thick to my delight and with the crunchy cookies, made it hard to break, but it was quite satisfying opening it!

My message –

Aww very sweet, and I guess since Christmas has passed and the decorations all down, it still stands!

Day 68 – What’s in the name

There are so many wonderful mint chocolates to enjoy, and this is one of them…

Andes dark chocolate sandwiched between two mint layers, it’s the inside out of an After Eight! Having the chocolate in this manner makes it sweeter and minter than it’s counterparts, but it’s still pretty good.

Hmm have you ever wondered how chocolates get their names? Andes isn’t from South America as one would have thought, nor does it boast anything to do with reaching heights of mountain tops, though the imagery does allude to snow capped peaks. It was originally named after the “Andy’s Candies” shop owner, Andrew Kanelos but he soon realised that men didn’t like giving their wives, girlfriends, lady friends chocolates with another guy’s name on it, so it was changed to Andes. Noted for future chocolate naming purposes.

Day 63 – Feel the bubbles

In my attempt to cure a week long headache I turn to a dear old friend

Nestle’s Aero peppermint bar was rarely found in shops here, but now most of the larger international stores import them from the UK! Yay for us.

Sweet, pepperminty and bubbly, it’s a delight to eat… though it hasn’t helped to ease my suffering head so I might just have a lie down instead.

Day 47 – Quattro squares

Ghirardelli is a famous American chocolate brand that has produced chocolates for the past 150 years. Something that makes these chocolate a little more special is that they roast their own cocoa beans before transforming them into smooth creamy chocolate – impressive!

These little bars were taken from a gift set of four of their square chocolates and I’ll rate them separately (does this count as 4 days then!?). They had been travelling in my bag for a while, so they got a little mushed… but that didn’t stop me from enjoying them ha

Milk chocolate with caramel filling
Hmm this was pretty scrumptious despite being melted and a bit messy! It gave me quite a toothache, but being a small square the sticky sweet caramel and milk chocolate was really good. It made me think of a caramel milk chocolate egg, yum:)

Dark chocolate with white mint filling
Always the dark mint lover, this was on par with an After Eight (a definite favourite), though the chocolate was thicker and the mint cream softer and runnier, which may have been a result of the heat we were experiencing. Again it was quite a sweet square, maybe a little too sweet for my minty liking.

Dark chocolate with raspberry filling
I’m starting to realise how sweet these little guys are! The raspberry filling was a little too sickly, nevertheless I ate it easily but did have to have a gulp of water to clear the palate.

Dark 60% chocolate with caramel filling
Hmm I do like them dark… this was my favourite by far. The caramel and dark chocolate just work so well together, definitely better than the milk one above.

Day 43 – Tropical mint

As I’ve said before, I have a soft spot for mint chocolate and this one is no exception – Tropical Source Mint Crunch Dark Chocolate. I could eat bars of these in one sitting. The dark chocolate is smooth and the crunchy mint is fresh and the texture is wonderful. Also we had a few bars of these given the suitability of this chocolate for my friend’s dietary requirements.

It’s vegan, dairy free, gluten free, kosher OU and made in Israel. The dark chocolate is deliciously smooth and the fresh mint pieces are crunchy and evenly distributed throughout the bar which is always nice. The flavour isn’t overpowering so it’s an easy bar to eat and consume a lot of so becareful!

Day 21 – Crispy, fresh… that’s all

As I’ve said before, I love mint chocolate and so thought I’d give this variation of the beloved M&M’s chocolate a go – Crispy Mint. What a mistake. The shell is sweet and minty, and there was barely any chocolate coating and the mint crisp part was like a peppermint rice cracker! It does leave a minty aftertaste, probably from all the added artificial flavouring and colouring. However, even though they are quite terrible, they are one of those annoying party snacks that you keep eating to past time and fake interest in the pseudo conversations around you…

…I’ve just finished the pack.

Note. Something pretty cool is personalising your own M&M’s great for wedding favours, corporate gifts or narcissists.

Day 2 – Some like it raw

Cacao that undergoes none or minimal processing and is free of additives is called raw chocolate. It is said to be the best way to enjoy the benefits of dark chocolate i.e. high in antioxidants, good source of magnesium, sulphur and other trace minerals and promotes alertness. Not to mention, the happy factor we all love:D As raw chocolate is taken directly from the cacao bean it is available unsweetened or with unrefined sweeteners – just to take that edge off.

I came across this bar whilst in New Zealand. I LOVE dark mint chocolate, so I didn’t have to think twice before putting in the basket.

The brand is Loving Earth, and has a “healthy – sustainable – fair” ethos and this chocolate is made from 72% organic raw cacao and sweetened with organic raw agave. (Disclaimer: please excuse the appearance of the packaging, something leaked on it!)

The chunky bar comes wrapped in gold foil paper to keep the freshness and is divided into handy 6 sections. The first bite was dark a little grainy due to the raw chocolateness and the fresh crunchy mint bits were delightful! I quickly munched down the rest of the piece and let the flavour mull on my palate. The aftertaste of the mint was refreshing and surprisingly lasting. For raw chocolate it’s exceptionally good… ALSO it’s organic, kosher and supports the Satipo community in Peru by buying the raw ingredients for more than 15% of the fair trade price – woah I’d eat that. Well I did. And I realise I didn’t take a picture of the actual bar, I accidentally finished it while I was out today and have only the foil left, and it would be mean to post an image of just that now wouldn’t it?!

You’ll just have to get this one yourself – click here.
