Day 224 – Vero round two

Well it didn’t take me long to find myself back at Vero, the beloved haven of chocolate. Though this time it was to their Landmark shop which happens to be in quite an obscure location. The Landmark fancy touch screen directories did little to help our quest, but we managed to find it.

Thanks to the power of group buying and persuasive talking we managed to get our groupon discount with promise of delivering the printed coupon within the hour (yay for office assistants!). I opted for the 70% dark raspberry hot chocolate (I said I was going to get this next, didn’t I?) and to accompany this, we selected from their chocaroons – caramel, passionfruit, framboise and blueberry.

My choice –

Framboise Chocaroon
The dark chocolate dipped framboise chocaroon sandwiched a raspberry and marshmallow like filling, making for a pretty sweet treat certain to satisfy any sweet tooth!! It was nice, but after recently developing a taste for macaroons, this one really wasn’t rating high on my scale. Especially for the price of it.

70% Dark Raspberry
I was a little hasty with the hot chocolate and began to sip away as we walked back. It was freakin hot!! The first sip was amazing… the thick dark chocolate was laced with a tart raspberry flavour with the bity bits. I didn’t stir the chocolate in, so the top layer maintained the rich raspberry flavour, accompanying each sip as I continued to drink it. I was just really surprised at how hot it really was, and I really had to be careful and coordinated, walking and sipping!

Day 208 – Favourite things

A few of my favourite things include good number days, like today – 208, conversations with old friends, cold showers after a humid walk home and these:

Royce dark raspberry thins. Amazing? Yes. A Japanese favourite loved by all, you can always guarantee quality when you have Royce. And these are no exceptions. I love the sharp sweetness of the raspberry with the dark chocolate, it’s just perfection.

Day 178 – German ties

We recently were paid a visit by my dad’s uncle’s son’s daughter. I’ll give you a moment to get your head around that. A lovely lady from Germany; my dad’s uncle married a German woman so it’s kinda strange thinking that I have European relatives!

She brought along family photo albums and stories to share about her brother, a well known chef in living in Chicago with his family and others in the UK and back home. It was fascinating finding out about people who are strangers and yet not. Just as exciting, she brought all the way from her motherland, a large stash of chocolate!! There’s no doubt we’re family as she clearly was a chocolate lover. These were some of them –

Niederegger is a famous marzipan maker since 1806 and is ‘made with love’ by the Niederegger family. I’m not really a fan of marzipan (oh that rhymes) but gave these guys a go. The raspberry one was a lot more palatable for me, as the flavour reminded me a little of a cherry red, but the almond paste was smoother and finer than the sweetened dessicated coconut. The milk chocolate surrounding it was as expected sweet and milky. Again, not my first choice.

The other one was plain and had a strong almond/marzipan-y taste so really wasn’t my sort of treat. I think I had eaten them as my last option as I didn’t have anything else around me and I was getting hungry! Probably wasn’t the best to go with something that I wasn’t much a fan of so it wasn’t satisfying for me. I’m sure marzipan lovers would adore these so if you come across them, give them a chance.

Day 157 – Bar of plenty

What a great name for a chocolate bar! Of course it’s from NZ with a clever play on a beautiful area called Bay of Plenty… well it’s made by Cadbury’s down south, and this one happened to be bought in Auckland.

That’s right, it’s Cadbury’s Berry Fruit and Vanilla Shortcake and it was delicious! Sweet, tart and buttery flavours melded with the chocolate and it was difficult not to finish the whole bar. It was probably a saving grace that there were plenty of people around to share the guilty pleasure this chocolate presented. It’s just sad that I won’t know when I’ll have the chance to enjoy one again. Sigh.

Day 131 – Something about Mary’s

Here’s another chocolate from Japanese brand Mary’s featured a few days ago –

Pistachio and Frambroise Sweet – It was actually dark chocolate which wasn’t too bad and the freeze dried raspberries were nicely tart, but the pistachios were odd. I’m really not of pistachios in things. Don’t get me wrong, I love the nut and I usually won’t stop eating them, but when they’re de-shelled and in things, it just doesn’t taste right. They even look funny, with their little green shriveled mass partially covered in a beige tough skin. So that in chocolate?! Yeh, I don’t think so.

Day 96 – 11-1-11

It’s another one of those special days today, yes I do have a thing for numbers and when they are like this, they just make me happy!

Today features another M&S creation – Milk Chocolate with Raspberry:

I’ve never really had raspberry with a milk before, as it’s usually too sweet to balance our the sharp sourness of the raspberry. In this case, the raspberries were freeze dried, so that took some of the tartness out of it, and seemed to work alright with the milk chocolate. I had to have several pieces to determine if I actually liked it, but by the afternoon I stopped and admitted that I had enough and that it didn’t find favour in my taste buds. It’s worth a few bites, but it’s not one to consume kilos of, well not for me.

Day 47 – Quattro squares

Ghirardelli is a famous American chocolate brand that has produced chocolates for the past 150 years. Something that makes these chocolate a little more special is that they roast their own cocoa beans before transforming them into smooth creamy chocolate – impressive!

These little bars were taken from a gift set of four of their square chocolates and I’ll rate them separately (does this count as 4 days then!?). They had been travelling in my bag for a while, so they got a little mushed… but that didn’t stop me from enjoying them ha

Milk chocolate with caramel filling
Hmm this was pretty scrumptious despite being melted and a bit messy! It gave me quite a toothache, but being a small square the sticky sweet caramel and milk chocolate was really good. It made me think of a caramel milk chocolate egg, yum:)

Dark chocolate with white mint filling
Always the dark mint lover, this was on par with an After Eight (a definite favourite), though the chocolate was thicker and the mint cream softer and runnier, which may have been a result of the heat we were experiencing. Again it was quite a sweet square, maybe a little too sweet for my minty liking.

Dark chocolate with raspberry filling
I’m starting to realise how sweet these little guys are! The raspberry filling was a little too sickly, nevertheless I ate it easily but did have to have a gulp of water to clear the palate.

Dark 60% chocolate with caramel filling
Hmm I do like them dark… this was my favourite by far. The caramel and dark chocolate just work so well together, definitely better than the milk one above.
